About Me
Juliette is the author of The Broken Trust series from DAW Books (Mazes of Power 2020, Transgressions of Power 2021, Inheritors of Power 2022) as well as numerous shorter works in magazines including Clarkesworld and Analog. Her work reflects her fascination with language and complex social systems. She is a linguist, anthropologist, and discourse analyst with a Ph.D. in Education specializing in Language, Literacy, and Culture.
Juliette grew up Capitola, California, the child of a multilingual university family with friends all over the world. She learned French as a child and visited France numerous times with her family. She wanted to learn every language — until she found out just how many there were! As a compromise, she studied French and Spanish in school and Japanese in college, spending her last year at Stanford’s Kyoto Center for Japanese Studies. She received her B.A. in Anthropology and Japanese from Stanford (1992), then continued on for an M.A. in Linguistics from UC Santa Cruz (1996) and a Ph.D. in Education from UC Berkeley (2003). She lived in the Monterey Bay Area until 1995 and the San Francisco Bay Area until 2022, when she moved to Melbourne, Australia with her Australian husband and two grown children.
Always a voracious reader, Juliette invented the world of Varin in 1983, but never really considered herself a writer (despite doing tons of writing) until 1999, when she started writing her first novel set in Varin and found she couldn’t stop. Her first publication was “Let the Word Take Me,” a short story which appeared in Analog Magazine’s July/August 2008 issue, but it was with the publication of “Cold Words” (Analog, Oct. 2009) that she realized she wanted to continue writing short fiction. Since then she has sold numerous stories to Analog and Clarkesworld. She sold her first novel, Mazes of Power, Book 1 of the Broken Trust series, to DAW Books in 2018, and it debuted in February 2020 (not an optimal time to fill bookstores with books!). Transgressions of Power came out in 2021 and Inheritors of Power in 2022. She is currently working on Refuge in Ink — most briefly describable as “not your usual magic book book” — as well as books 4 and 5 of The Broken Trust Series.
