I’ve been writing since I was little, but started writing fiction seriously in 1999, and I’ve been published in short fiction since the appearance of my first short story in Analog Science Fiction and Fact in 2008. Since then my short fiction has been published in Analog, Clarkesworld, and Fantasy & Science Fiction magazines as well as several anthologies. I sold my first novel, Mazes of Power, last summer, and it will be coming out in summer of 2020.
Worldbuilding is one of my favorite parts of writing. I run the Dive into Worldbuilding video series on YouTube with writeups at my blog, and accompanying workshop activities at Patreon. So far I have three worlds in which I set various of my stories: the world of Varin, the Allied Systems universe, and the Realm of Words. Varin is by far the biggest, and I’ll be talking about it a lot as I prepare for the novel’s release. It’s a world of sociological science fiction.
All my fiction is influenced by my experience with foreign languages, linguistics, and anthropology. I speak French and Japanese fluently, and know some Spanish. I have a B.A. in Japanese, an M.A. in Linguistics, and a Ph.D. in Education. I have spent time living in France and Japan. I live in California’s San Francisco Bay Area with my Australian husband and our two teenage boys.
I’m envisioning this website as the hub of my activities on the internet, so you can always come here to find out the latest news about my writing. Please sign up for my newsletter to get my news delivered to your inbox! (I promise I won’t spam you!)
